Shamanic Counselling and Healing

Helping you maintain you physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

For some people, ordinary conversation isn't enough to reach what needs to be reached, shamanic counselling and healing offers a different route, allowing you to more easily access your subconscious, where all the answers to your issues live.

Shamanic counselling is a blend of emotional talking therapy, somatic and/or breath work and spiritual exploration (non religious). This work draws on one of the oldest known approaches to understanding the human psyche, long before modern psychology and Carl Jung gave language to the unconscious mind, shadow, and trauma, shamanic traditions were already working with these same territories, through journeying, symbol, and ceremony.

This is not the same as energy healing, it is a process that helps you reach deep inside to draw on your own inner resources. I hold the space and guide you so that what needs to surface, can surface, in your own time.

What is Shamanic Counselling

Shamanism is one of the oldest known approaches to understanding the human psyche, a form of non-religious spiritual counselling that moves below the conscious, thinking mind and works directly with whatever arises from deeper within.

This is not the same as energy healing, it is a process that helps you reach deep inside to draw on your own inner resources.

I trained as a shamanic practitioner, a shamanic counsellor and transpersonal therapist at the Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies and my role is to hold the space for this process, not to perform direct healing on you, but to guide you through a process that draws on your own inner resources, to access your own inner healing, so that what needs to surface can surface, in your own time.

How a Session Works

Sessions last approximately 2 - 2.5 hours. Your first session will be 2.5 - 3 hours, to allow time for us to get to know each other and for you to talk about about what's going on for you.

We'll spend the first 20-30 minutes talking, about what's brought you here, what's going on for you right now, and what you'd like to be different in your life - whether that's your health, your relationships, work, home life, or a general sense that something isn't right.

From there, we move into the journey itself.

  • Intention setting : we briefly discuss what you want to explore or bring into the journey

  • Journeying begins : you listen to drumming through headphones

  • Speaking your journey aloud : as the journey unfolds, you speak out loud what you're experiencing, images, sensations, words, while I hold the space, listen, observes and take notes

  • Recording : your spoken journey is recorded as it happens

  • Listening back together : afterward, we listen back to the recording together

  • Making sense of it : using what emerged in your journey, we work together to draw out insight and shed light on the issue you came with

  • Integration : the session closes with space for your mind to settle and absorb what came up, before you return fully to ordinary waking awareness.

Soul Loss and Soul Retrieval

For those who wish to go further.

Sometimes, in the course of this work, what surfaces points toward soul loss, a concept with a close parallel in modern psychology, where a part of the self steps aside, or dissociates, at a time of trauma or overwhelm, in order to survive it.

For clients who wish to continue this work, additional sessions focused on soul retrieval are available, as a separate appointment from shamanic counselling. These sessions may include the use of drum and rattle as sound work, and ceremony as part of the integration process.

Shamanism and Healing - Rooted in Something Real

This work has a striking resemblance to Carl Jung's concept of active imagination, a technique Jung himself used to access and dialogue with the unconscious mind.

Both approaches share the same essential principle: that the unconscious holds material the conscious mind cannot always reach directly, and that engaging with it deliberately, in a held and safe space, can produce genuine insight and lasting change.
