What is Shamanic Counselling?
Shamanic counselling is a gentle, experiential form of therapy that helps you explore your inner world to gain insight, healing, and clarity. In simple terms, it works with imagination, imagery, feelings, and the subconscious mind, the part of us that holds deep memories, emotions, patterns, and inner wisdom. It is strongly based on Carl Jung psychology, archetypal imagery and symbolism.
Rather than focusing only on talking about problems, shamanic counselling allows you to experience your inner landscape directly. Using rhythmic drumming, you are guided into a deeply relaxed, meditative state where the mind becomes quieter and more open. From this place, images, sensations, memories, or stories may arise naturally. These experiences come from within you, your subconscious mind, and are meaningful for your own healing and growth.
No belief system is required. Shamanic counselling is not religious and does not involve suggestion or hypnosis. You remain fully aware and in control throughout the session.
What Makes Shamanic Counselling Different?
Traditional counselling often works mainly through conversation and logical thinking. While this can be very helpful, some issues live deeper than words. Shamanic counselling works at both a conscious and subconscious level, helping you access insights that may not be easily reached through talking alone.
What makes shamanic counselling unique:
It works with the subconscious mind, where habits, emotional wounds, and inner beliefs are stored
The process is experiential rather than analytical
Insights arise from within you, not from interpretation or advice
The body, emotions, imagination, and intuition are all included in the healing process
It supports deep integration and change that continues after the session
Many people find this approach helpful when they feel stuck, disconnected, or when they “understand” an issue logically but still feel unable to shift it.
Who Can Benefit from Shamanic Counselling?
Shamanic counselling can be helpful if you:
Feel stuck in repeating emotional or life patterns
Are experiencing anxiety, low mood, or emotional overwhelm
Feel disconnected from yourself or your sense of purpose
Want deeper self-understanding or personal growth
Are processing life changes, loss, or transitions
Have tried talking therapies and feel something is still unresolved
Are drawn to a more holistic or intuitive approach to healing
You do not need prior experience with meditation, therapy, or shamanic practices. All that is required is openness and curiosity.
What Benefits Can You Expect?
Each person’s experience is unique, but common benefits include:
Greater clarity and insight into emotional or life challenges
Release of old emotional patterns or inner blocks
A deeper connection to your inner wisdom and intuition
Increased sense of calm, grounding, and self-trust
New perspectives on long-standing issues
Continued emotional processing and integration after the session
Because the work engages the subconscious mind, shifts often continue to unfold for one to two weeks after the session.
What Happens in a Shamanic Counselling Session?
Sessions last approximately two hours and unfold in a calm, supportive, and safe space.
Initial Conversation and Intention Setting: We begin with a relaxed conversation where you can share what you are currently experiencing and what you would like support with. Together, we gently set an intention for the session. This helps focus the inner journey without forcing or controlling it.
Drumming Journey: You then listen to a rhythmic drumming recording through headphones. The steady rhythm allows the brain to enter a theta brainwave state, the same state experienced during deep meditation or daydreaming. This state makes it easier to access the subconscious mind. As you listen, you speak out loud about what you see, feel, sense, or experience. There is no right or wrong, you simply describe what arises. Your words are recorded so nothing is lost.
Listening Back and Reflecting: Once the drumming ends, we listen to the recording together. This often brings new awareness as you hear your own words and experiences. You are invited to share what stood out, how it felt, and what meaning it may have for you.
Integration and Closing Conversation: We finish with a supportive conversation to help you integrate what you discovered and explore how it relates to your life. This grounding step helps bridge the inner experience with everyday reality. Integration continues naturally after the session, often at a subconscious level, for one to two weeks.
Although even one session can be helpful, I usually recommend at least three sessions at an interval of 2-3 weeks. You may begin to notice that as you continue with your journeys, the insights and integration from your first experience lay the foundation for deeper exploration in subsequent journeys. Each one often builds upon the previous, weaving together layers of understanding, healing, and growth.
