People Pleasing & Your Health | Therapy in Louth, Monaghan & Online
Is People Pleasing Affecting Your Health? And What You Can Do About It.
People pleasing often looks like kindness, generosity, or being “easy‑going.” But beneath the surface, it can quietly take a toll on your physical, emotional, and energetic health.
Many of the people I work with are caring, intuitive, and deeply empathetic, often sensitive, self‑aware, and sometimes spiritually inclined, yet they feel exhausted, anxious, resentful, or disconnected from themselves. Over time, chronic people pleasing can become more than a habit; it can become a health issue.
Through an integrative blend of transpersonal therapy, Jungian informed shamanic counselling, and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), I help individuals across South Armagh, Monaghan, Louth, and online reconnect with their authentic selves, establish healthy boundaries, and restore balance.
What Is People Pleasing?
People pleasing is the unconscious pattern of prioritizing others’ needs, emotions, and expectations over your own, often at the direct expense of your wellbeing. It frequently manifests as;
Difficulty saying no to requests, even when you are already completely overwhelmed.
Fear of conflict or deeply worrying about disappointing others.
Over-giving and under-receiving in personal, family, and professional relationships.
Constantly seeking approval or external validation to feel secure.
Ignoring your own needs, physical feelings, or intuitive warning signs.
Self-limiting beliefs and negative internal self-talk.
While these patterns often develop as vital survival strategies during childhood, they become deeply ingrained, automatic habits that actively work against you in adult life.
The Hidden Health Impact of People Pleasing
When you consistently override your own emotional and physical needs, your body and nervous system pay a massive price. Chronic people pleasing frequently triggers;
Chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, and an inability to truly relax.
Intense guilt or shame whenever you attempt to set a basic boundary.
Low self-worth or a complete loss of personal identity.
Suppressed anger that eventually leads to deep resentment or total burnout.
Chronic fatigue and adrenal exhaustion.
Physical tension, frequent headaches, or ongoing digestive issues.
A weakened immune system, which can allow complex auto-immune syndromes to arise.
Feeling completely "drained" or energetically empty after normal social interactions.
From a holistic perspective, people pleasing creates internal fragmentation, a split between who you truly are and who you feel you need to be to remain safe. Over time, this disconnection manifests as physical illness, emotional numbness, or a persistent sense of being stuck in life.
Why Willpower Alone Won’t Fix This
Many people try to "just be more assertive" or force boundaries using pure logic, and while helpful on a surface level, this approach usually fails.
People pleasing is rarely a conscious choice, it is deeply rooted in the subconscious mind, hardwired into the nervous system, and sometimes carried within ancestral or soul-level patterns. To create lasting change, we must work with deeper therapeutic modalities.
1. Transpersonal Therapy: Healing the Pattern at the Root
Transpersonal therapy goes beyond standard symptom management, it explores the deepest layers of human experience, identity, meaning, and consciousness. Through this lens, we explore where the pattern originated, heal the parts of you that learned safety through self-abandonment, and help you access inner wisdom and intuition.
2. Integrative Counselling: Restoring Energetic Boundaries
From an integrative perspective, chronic people pleasing often involves profound energy loss and soul fragmentation. Holistic healing is one of the earliest forms of somatic psychotherapy, by identifying where you are giving away your energy, we work to release old patterns that keep you over-giving, strengthening your energetic boundaries and sense of personal sovereignty.
3. NLP: Rewiring the Subconscious Mind
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) works directly with the subconscious mind, the exact place where your automatic habits are stored. Using NLP, we isolate the unconscious beliefs driving your behaviour, such as "I am only safe if everyone else is happy", rewire your automatic responses to conflict, and anchor strong internal states of calm, clarity, and self-trust.
(Note: You can explore more about these dynamics in my guided article on Hyperawareness, People Pleasing, and Emotional Self-Reliance).
What Happens When You Stop People Pleasing?
As these restrictive patterns safely dissolve, my clients routinely experience a beautiful shift in their daily vitality:
Improved physical energy and revitalized wellness.
Stronger immune system and healthy nervous system regulation.
Healthier relationships built on authentic connection rather than compliance.
Clearer boundaries maintained comfortably without a shred of guilt.
A deeper sense of peace, self-respect, and core confidence.
Most importantly, your physical body no longer has to carry the heavy psychological burden of unspoken "no's."
Ready to Reclaim Your Health and Authentic Self?
If you are a sensitive, intuitive, or spiritually curious person who has spent a lifetime putting everyone else first, you may already feel that standard talk-based approaches haven’t gone deep enough.
You don’t need another cognitive strategy to cope, you need a safe, confidential space where the deeper pattern can finally soften and release.
